Atumpan's approach wasn't developed in theory—it has been shaped through decades of work with audiences, artists, educators, and institutions. Since 1998, Atumpan Dance Theatre and Atumpan The Talking Drums have brought together storytelling, world music, dance, history, education, and audience participation in museums, historic sites, performing arts venues, schools, festivals, and community settings.

Arts integration has long been central to our work

Atumpan has served as a Virginia Commission for the Arts performer and has maintained a relationship with Young Audiences of Virginia—now Arts for Learning Virginia—dating back to 2001, with a break from the artist roster during the pandemic. Through Young Audiences, Atumpan developed and delivered programs connecting the arts with curriculum and learning objectives in areas ranging from history and literacy to health, communication, social problem-solving, and school readiness.
